How we measure our jeans

It's not rocket science, but how jeans are measured and sized accounts for more questions of us than almost any other subject. Why the confusion? Well, a lot of it stems from the fact that western jeans manufacturers have for years "flatter-tagged" their jeans, that is, erred on the low side when stating the waist-size. Conversely, many Japanese Jeans companies do the opposite. So the net result is that tag-sizing is often more myth than reality.

So the only really accurate way to guage your size, is to take a pair of your favourite fitting jeans and measure them as per the steps below.

We don't claim that this is a world-first, but it does follow pretty established rules for measuring jeans in the modern era.

waist

Waist

Button up the waist and lay them out on a flat surface. Try to get the front half of the waist band level with the back half, measure the arrow and double the result.

Front Rise

Measure from the bottom of the crotch all the way to the top of the waist band.

Rear Rise

Measure from the bottom of the crotch all the way to the top of the waist band.

Thigh

Measure from the bottom of the crotch to the outside leg, keeping the measure parallel to the waist band.

Knee

Firstly measure 13 inches down the leg from the bottom of the crotch.

Then measure the width of the leg at that point.

Inseam

Measure the length of the leg from the bottom of the crotch to the bottom of the leg.

Leg opening

Measure the opening.
