Chambray

A chambray is a plain weave fabric woven with a coloured warp yarn and white weft yarn, the name is derived from the French city of Cambrai.

It can look similar to denim, but with denim you will notice a lighter colour to the underside of the fabric (when a lighter weft yarn is used) because it is a twill weave, whilst with chambray the reverse of the fabric is very similar to the face:  this is because the chambray’s warp and weft yarns will alternate one over the other, while denim’s warp yarn will go over two yarns in the weft before going under one.
