Cheap socks, any suggestions?
« on: September 19, 2019, 11:13:01 pm »
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality (yet still cheap) sock?

I can't seem to find anything that is decent for a reasonable price.

Any help here is appreciated!

More info needed
Weight... like summer dress socks, fall winter boots socks?
What’s cheap. Not to be snarky but this is a forum full of $300 shirts. $10....$30...
Generally speaking i like wigwam brand at about $12 a pair. Good durability.

Whatever you do, don’t buy AnonymousIsm socks. They’ll get toe holes fast.

I’ve heard great things about Darn Tough. Smart Wool is good and can be had on sale. Beams+ makes decent socks too

Well, that is a good point.  I only wear Chup made with Curdura.  We dont sell them because I don't think they will sell well.  But, yes they are expensive at about USD36 per pair, but I have yet to wear a pair out, and I am extremely heavy on my clothes.  I bought 8 more pairs last month, on the basis that I may never need to buy another pair and I was worried that Chup would stop making them.....

@phillyforager

Yes indeed, price per wear is the thing here.

I use IH socks. I have about 10 pairs. The first pair I ever bought, 5 years ago have just started wearing thin to the point where a small hole has appeared. For context, I live in Norway and wear Wesco boots. That means I'm walking on either hardwood floors or unforgiving insoles all the time. So that five years of probably weekly or bi weekly wear. Not bad for $30.

Wigwam cost less than $20/pair.  I have a few pairs being consistently worn for about 5 years now and they are still without holes.  Like Giles mentioned Chup socks are $30-$40 but also last a really long time.

I wear Gammarelli socks in Merino wool from Mes Chaussettes Rouge in Paris. They're €20 ($22) a pair and the Pope's official brand!

They're a thinner sock. I've had them for two years and one or two are starting to wear through into holes now.

i don't worry about holes in my sock. more of the elasticity. i've got a few chup that have lost that effect and are a total bitch to put on around the heel and ankles

Darn Tough socks are pretty solid. I have a few pairs that I use for the gym/running/obstacle course racing, and they’re both comfortable and have held up well so far. Mostly in the $6 to $20 range, depending on style and whether I got them on sale.

funny thing how talking about holes of socks and i pulled one out that i've maybe worn a couple times.. and it has a hole in the ankle. no weird frays or cuts in the knit as well. how odd. i can't remember the name of it. but it used to be in the IH shop..
