Background to this board
-
The forum is comprised of members who have been around for a long time, those who have just joined and everything in between.
Part of the reason for creating this forum was to provide a platform to ask questions, but it was also envisaged to be an accumulation of knowledge.
It was also thought that new members joining would be self-motivated enough to actually do some research before asking a question that in all probability has been asked a million times before.
We want the forum to be an interesting, informative place to be. But if the same question gets asked over and over again and the same answer is given over and over again, the questioner may get what he needs to know, but it unsurprisingly irritates members who have been around for some time.
So this board is a work in progress, but over time it will try to encapsulate simple questions and simple answers.
The aim is to:
- Have new members take a look here before asking a question that has likely been asked and answered regularly before
- A place where if you do ask a question that has been asked and answered a million times before, the mods can point you to, so they spend more time creating interesting content than repeating themselves.

Giles, while I think this is a great idea and will be extremely useful, don't underestimate the power of having someone like yourself, Alex, Rueben or any of the team interact with a newbie (even if it's an eye rolling comment to you). It could be that one simple interaction that makes them a customer, as opposed to browsing elsewhere online.

Yes, and thank you. , I'm actually having that exact discussion with @Alex at the moment…I'm really trying to find a route forward that does not have the old-timers roll their eyes, but also does not disenfranchise new posters.
What many old-timers forget, is that they were noobs once too
-
@jordanscollected Thanks for this. You have very succinctly summarised my position in the discussion Giles and I are having
-
I think of it as just part of what we’re doing here. Answering noobs’ questions is part of the game, kinda. The things I get annoyed with are more along the lines of blatantly ignoring buy/sell rules like constantly bumping or posting in threads, etc.

Posting sales shit in product threads pisses me off, but mostly it is a mistake.
I have been having an offline convo with another member and we agreed that members who only post in buying and selling are pretty bloody annoying. I had one member the other day, who has only ever posted in buying and selling, complaining about another member who had bumped a sale after a few days. My answer to him was short and sweet….
-
Obviously everyone engages in their own way, but I lurked and learned before I ever registered here, and I don't think I'm the only one. Repetitive Q&A definitely creates noise, and the more noise there is, the harder it is to get to relevant information and the more bloated the site becomes.
This and FAQ/introductory threads (not to mention the content on the retail sites) should help, but you can also use the forum search feature, or form Google queries. For example on the latter, you can filter results to the forum thusly in a query:
site: https://www.ironheart.co.uk/forum/ [insert search query]At the end of the day, while I applaud efforts such as this, I have seen so many questions asked that have the answer right on the product page, so color me skeptical that there's a way to forestall these kinds of questions. Sometimes people just don't read, or they miss information when they do.

I just wanted to say that if you are new and you want to ask a question you can feel free to ask me. I don't mind at all. If I don't know I can find out for you and point you in the right direction. I get questions about stuff all the time and I really enjoy helping people. I get a slew of questions or asked about my opinion on stuff pretty much every day.
You can either PM me or send me a message on IG (changed my name again to) smellyoldjeans
I wanted the name "lowonthehog" but that was already taken.

^ Love this guy!
I too would be happy to answer questions, but you might want to get a second opinion
-
I am one of those people that probably only posts in buy/sell/trade 99% of the time. But I do scour the other threads a lot for info. Most of the reason I don't post in other threads is because I have used the search and found the info I needed, or anything I would add has already been said better in the same thread by someone else.
I am trying to speak up more and voicing my opinion (in my day to day life) so I think that will likely transition to here and other forums as well.

Bit of a rant…(bear with me)
I've noticed that some of the sizing questions border on insane...
Environmental factors (too much salt, beer, food, sweets, heat, humidity, cold, etc.) can change your body size daily when you are discussing sizing and fractions of fractions of an inch (mm's for metric minded).
I get trying to find your size/fit...but don't forget our bodies are constantly in flux. I had a few suits/shirts custom tailored and guess what...They don't always fit perfectly.
IH is special in that they take measurements of clothing and provide averages for each respective size, but they are only averages...
Sizing charts that are provided help tremendously, but we have to do our parts too. If you have a favourite shirt/pant, spend the time and measure it (IH style - which they have video tutorials on how to do). Compare your favourite with the charts and go from there.
Since there are fluctuations in sizing, figure out what's important to you. Chest, Shoulder, Arm Length, Inseam, etc. and send a note to the IH crew if things aren't quite right.
Sometimes you get lucky…

Amen to that @goosehd
I understand that it’s a bit nervy dropping a chunk of change on an item of clothing if you’re not desensitised, so you want it to fit, but I think for some people a combination of having the extra info and not really knowing what they’re doing yet just freaks them out unnecessarily. I suppose there’s also the element of it where when you’ve done it a few times and realised some stuff just fits better than others, you chill out a bit.
I personally don’t mind people asking and quite enjoy helping if I know the answer
-
Oh, on a side note though, it really grinds my gears when people come along thinking they can interfere with the sect willy nilly.

As far as I've seen you've been a model forum participant @chrisjohnnick and I think you're far overestimating your balance of sales thread to other participation.
