Bike Scam
-
I am being scammed on the sale of a bike. I know it is a scam, but just can't work it out….Any ideas?
Hello Giles Padmore,
I confirmed the bank cheque as been sent to your address today and you
shall receive it soon but there was a little error on the amount.there was a mistake with the amount on the cheque
The amount sent was 22,,000 € instead of £15,000.
it was a big mistake made By My Associate who sent the cheque .
My Associate was meant to send your cheque and also send the transport
agent cheque separately because of my other consignment to pay but she
has the amount of two on a single chequeI believe this should not stop the sales of the Bike
When you receive the cheque please deposit in your bank account for clearance
when you receive the cheque and confirm the money in your account, you
will deduct your offer and send the rest of the money to carrier
agent.I will pay you £15,200 for the Bike
I hope you will be able to assist me ?
I will await your reply soon
Thank you

Sounds like that associate is going to be in trouble.

That's an easy one. Even if the cheque clears in the first place, it can be revoked later on. I'm not sure how much longer, but by then the money you sent back will be long gone!
-
The closest I can make of it is that they think that you will deposit the 22K, send them the 7K difference, and then somehow they plan on telling your bank that they did not authorize the check, so they'll get their 22K back plus your 7K. But once the funds have cleared, I don't know that they can make any such claim.

I can’t believe they’re still running this scam. My brother in law had the same thing happen to him about 10 years ago.
I think that it works by you shipping the bike and a cheque for the difference shortly after receiving the fucked up cheque. The bank will show the fucked up cheque has been deposited in you account for about 10 days before they catch it and then tell you the cheque has bounced.
I guess that if the scam is still being run means sometimes it works in their favour.

So, with the help of one of my mates who knows a lot about this sort of shit….
As @tody says, even a certified cheque can be reversed after funds have cleared. So someone in on the scam claims that his account was hijacked and the cleared funds are reversed. Not a problem, if I have not shipped the bike.
The scammers profit is on the £7k that he asks me to send to the "carrier", I send the £7k, he reverses the £22K and I am £7k down….
As I said, I have asked for a cheque for the exact amount, I suspect that will be the last I hear from the bastards.....
