The OG of the Denim World
-
Saw a recent ad for Levis 501s and the caption was "The OG of the Denim World". I stopped and thought for a second and realized that they just might be right about that. Can't think of anyone else,or a model of a jean that could make that claim. I don't think that Wrangler or Lee could make that claim. Any thoughts on this? Anyone here never worn Levis?

I have a pair of brown whipcord Levi's still in rotation.
They're right IMO. There were denim pants, but Levis riveted and sewed them into jeans before anyone else. I think they also added the pocketwatch and fifth pockets before anyone else.

This is interesting–literally the year the rivet patent expired, enabling competing jeans, they rolled out the 501.

@Jett129 never worn Levi's, couldn't afford the repro stuff when I was in college so used to wear solely black skinny jeans. I did have an acid wash Type III which I thought was amazing but got stolen in a nightclub
Giles lent me the book Ametora a few years back which gave me the first proper insight in to how a lot of it began!

Pretty cool @AdamJ I didn't think anyone would answer yes to that question, and BAM! right off the bat. I grew up wearing Levis Shrink to Fit Raw 501s,and Lee Riders. It was my growing dissatisfaction with Levis that lead me to Google Heavyweight Denim for riding a motorcycle, and the rest is,as they say,History.

I quite enjoyed Ametora. Cool shit.

Yep, that claim is valid.
If you want to learn more about the early days and the first "jeans brands", I would suggest the book "Jeans of the old West" by Michael Harris. -

Jeans of the Old West is a fantastic book on denim history. Levi's in general should be considered the OG of jeans. Doesn't mean they're the best any more, but they are certainly the OG.
