Shirt Alterations

When in between sizes go for the size up then get alteration. Anybody do this? i have medium shoulders and small all other measurements.
Im specifically asking in regards to OD work selvedge(326OD), military serge(307), and 12oz wabash(266).
Ive never had shirt altered, bad idea? will the structure/quality not be the same? -
What's your critical measurement? I like wider shoulders and a more relaxed chest area, so I size up and just usually have a wider opening and longer sleeves than I need. I don't alter anything and just deal with it. trouble with alterations is the finishing construction on these IH pieces is a work of art, and most tailors would just rip it open and slap it back together.
personally, I'd just size up and make do.

yes! you said exactly what I was thinking the construction is functional art! would you modify a lambo or ferrari?I know I wouldn't, same with iron heart shirts. Looks like I'll take your advice to size up and make do. thx for your input

I know the problem. Climber's shoulders and forearms make sizing very difficult for me. I am usually between two sizes. However I found that the forearm part of the sleeves usually stretches. I have never dared to buy a UHF western cut because the latissimus area ist usually too tight in an L but the XL ist generally too wide and long. Therefore I went with a workshirt UHF but the buttons always come undone by themselves.
EDIT:
I just remembered that that I have a western cut shirt, when I took the photo of my Casio. It was the first IH product I ever bought. It's a 42 and I messed it up by washing incorrectly :/.

Thank you! I might try that at the weekend :).

Or, and admittedly this is more labour intensive but I like the customisation it allows, replace the buttons. The buttonholes on IH workshirts will take up to 15mm buttons. I've replaced the buttons on a couple of workshirts (here and here).

That looks great EdH! You're always so well dressed :)! I've got some anxiety about messing such an expensive shirt up; never really altered or mended a more expensive piece of clothing myself. But I might :).

It was really easy to make sure the buttons went in exactly the same place, actually. IH's material is so heavyweight that you can clearly see where the threads holding the buttons on were after you snip them off, and I just made sure that my needle went through the exact same place on the fabric.
You'll have to give it a go to see what I mean, but it was easy peasy.
