Giles and Paula in Austin - Early November 2017
-
All Giles wanted for his birthday was
his 2 front teeth, to go around the world doing a bit of fishing. Having @Alex on board gives me and Paula the luxury of travelling for a straight month (though I have got to come back via China for business - so make that 5 weeks) The first leg of our holiday will be a few days in Austin where some friends are competing in the:http://www.24hseries.com/2017/24h-cota-usa-2017/circuit
Yes, they're mad. At a recent 24hour race in Australia, Paul "forgot" to go right at the end of the start finish straight, he got an upgrade home….. Anyway he's OK and the car is rebuilt (well, it was cheaper to buy a new one).....
So we'd like to have a beer with whoever can make it.
@Madame Buttonfly will publish more details soon….

Well, I'll definitely be there. Austin is a fun place to visit, especially since it's only an hour away (well, maybe two, given the notoriously bad traffic).

In.

I've heard Franklins BBQ burned down so maybe a Salt Lick trip for local flavor is in order.?.
-
Trying to make it work for that weekend. Never been to Austin. I feel the time is right.

I might have seen that these will make an appearance at the Kanreki.
If I make it to Austin and if one happens to fall in your bag and makes it to Austin, my key ring is denimless at the moment. Just sayin.

The only way one will "fall into my bag" is if any are left after Kanreki…..Haraki sent them to me to dish out to people who buy shit over the weekend (he did not put it quite like that.....)

I thought it was only partially damaged? Not that I'm opposed to Salt Lick. Also heard good things about La Barbeque and Micklethwaite's.

Asking local friends on all counts. More to follow.
-
I'm down for some Texas BBQ [emoji491] but I'll settle for Whataburger, wait are there Whataburgers in Austin? I've had it in DFW.

Myself and @formulapfaff are "planning" to be there but he is still waiting to hear if he is driving in "24 hours of Lemons" that weekend -
@Giles - I keep trying to find tickets to the COTA event and am coming up dry - are tickets available yet somewhere? Also, what car are your friends driving? Crossing my fingers for the Cayman as It looks like every other driver is brining a 911 to the party lol

Very excited for this! I sent Paula a list of a bunch of possible venues, hopefully they're suitable for everyone.
Franklin BBQ was only partially damaged, but to get any food there you've got to go wait from like 7 AM until 11 when they open. Just not worth it when there are many other places with BBQ that's arguably as good.
I've got other BBQ options if that's what most people are interested in, but most of the places I sent Paula were beer/bar related with some solid food options.
Looking forward to meeting everyone! -
Franklin BBQ should be back up and serving again within the next 4-6 weeks but I agree with @Broark, there are plenty other options that are on par with Franklin without the wait. I'd put La Barbecue up there with Franklin on any given day and Mickelwaith is a very close second. I'd probably skip Salt Lick as it's more of a picturesque venue with decent BBQ and Driftwood can be a hassle to get to depending on traffic.
Just throwing it out there but my sister and her husband own and operate the King Bee Lounge at 12th and Chicon which might be good for a meetup. They've got a very large bar area with a nice patio that could accommodate a large crowd without much fuss. They've got great cocktails, award winning pizza and some of the best Mezcal offerings in Austin. Let me know if there's any interest and I can assist with coordinating.

Sweet! I've been watching the COTA site, but they are still pushing their Sept/Oct events.
Well, at least the 911 is tried and true
