Overdying - Overdone or All Day?!
-
Overdye The World? Please continue your Overdye discussions here. With all of the different companies overdying, is it too much? Has it reached and end or is it just beginning?

i liked the black & blues, but actually settled on a pair of Left Field NYC Cone White Oak Indigo Selvedge Duck Chinos. I got a pair of Rogue Territory Dbl indigo trousers & they are really enough on the OD front for me (as far as trousers go).
od should mean over dyed, but is instead becoming overdone. of course just the way i see it & of course i don't make-up the entire market so you should be safe with OD all you fans of OD

How so, Mister MadMonday?
look out in the world & you see indigo baths have become very popular.
jcrew, roy, rogue territory, unionmade indigo, & i could be missing some brands, but those are the ones that come to mind (without even mentioning Iron Heart)
MadMonday; Oh I see what you mean now. I thought you were talking exclusively just IH items. I, myself, like IH's OD. I can't say much for the other brands out there because I'm not too familiar with them.
i like the od as well, but i liked it more when it wasn't as common. i'm just an elitist that doesn't want everyone to have access to a dope product :-[
true story, only slightly joking
[/quote]I feel you. I thought IH was the only company doing it because of how "stubborn" the company is and it would make sense for a dye that doesn't fade so easily. But if everyone else is doing, then fcuk.. Haha

Backed. And not just that, but imo standard indigo jeans fade much nicer…

Quote from MM: "i'm just an elitist that doesn't want everyone to have access to a dope product "
^TBH, I never heard of od outside of IH and Roy products. But on these the price alone makes sure that not "everyone" has access to it. If that makes you feel better
nope, not really, but i think the fascination with OD in general is akin to the way alot of things spread & grow. the same can be said about raw denim as well as flannel and any other trend in any section of the market.
just look at the amount of folks that now make CPO style shirts with side pockets :-X

maybe I've missed the definition of overdye at some point along the way but.. I'm pretty sure overdye is essentially garment dyeing something that has already been dyed. 'Double Indigo' trousers and those left field chinos use blue warp/weft dyed yarns - meaning the dyeing process occurs long before the garment is made. (AKA not overdyed )
That being said, there are some companies out these offering OD products (In almost every case I've seen, indigo warp/naturalish weft jeans with a black fugitive pigment) just like IH does. So in essence, yes, it is still a bit overdone but I like to think not every black fugitive pigment dye is the same - I'm sure the recipe can vary in creating such a dye. IH's so called recipe for their black fugitive pigment die is different from everybody elses. The distinction i make is that while somebody may be doing an OD jeans they aren't doing a true IH OD jean.

I have two pairs of overdyed, 634SB and SEXIH07BK
I'm keeping them as part of my collection, but honestly, they never see any wear. I think I can count the number of times I've worn them combined on my fingers
Just not my thing
-
Agree with you Doug. There is just something about the look of them after many wears that does not impress me. Regardless, I feel obligated to give it a shot at some point.

"overdye" seems to mean a lot of things
there's indigo dipped like the forum tees or ihsh-43
I believe the roy indigo ducks would be similar
and then there's the black overdyed jeans like 634s-b, sexih07bk, etc
I think the ihsh-22od flannels were done this way as well as the 27bk
which is entirely different and happens with this:kiya posted a pic of the machine way back when on twitter
http://twitpic.com/382gw6
link doesn't seem to be working now, but there it is anywayI can't get the image to come up here at work but maybe someone can actually post the pic of the machine here

What I know for sure and will defend till the end is IH should continuing doing the OD process.
As Seul said, the standard indigo fades looks great, but I feel the OD is still fairly new when it comes to the outcome after a good amount of wear time. I'm pretty much curious on how they'll look as their color is quite deceiving.
Black? Dark indigo? Grey? Let's find out.

I find overdyed denim an extra twist to make things interesting.. And everyone should have at least one in their wardrobe.. Just my opinion..
-
I love 634s-b I think they are an essential pc.

I see a similarity in our taste haha.

You are correct sir between sb and the IH-MW
-
I'm probably a bit late to the party with my IHD-01od but I love the thing and will definitely buy another OD piece in the future.
-
Haraki did the 634S-B a few years ago. It was the first od thing he did, and guess what, I just did not get it - for me a pair of jeans had to be indigo, indigo or indigo.
Anyway, I started doing more and more od stuff, and now you would have to kill me to prise my IHD-01od off me…..
-
IMO od is a nice variety of denim and it enables me to wear black appearing jeans that still fade. And, as i think, in a more interesting way than black knights or the SBG. So, it has a permission of existance.
-
i love OD, i just loved it more when it wasn't as common as it is now. the process of accomplishing the OD as well as the possible legendary "atari fades", it's really dope stuff. i have a pair of the SEXIH01BK (Black Overdyed Version) & i had a pair of SEXIH07BK (Overdyed Black) & i can honestly say the evolution of the OD process is evident when you compare the jeans side by side. i'm a nostalgic romantic, so i always like things that are limited & hard to come by. once it becomes common, part of it's charm is out the window for me
in essence, it's not OD, it's really me
-
i have a pair of the SEXIH01BK
want to see, when convenient…..
also interested to hear your thoughts on the evolution of the OD process, I have seen pics of old OD jeans
(not old as in worn, I mean old as in the first 634s-b) nothing in person yet
and they seem "less black" in pics if that makes sense
I think the first 634s-b were actually called super black, before what is now called super black was in existenceIH-634S-B with all the naughty bits, circa Jan 2006:

yeah, i remember seeing pictures of them being less black - i think low rider has a faded pair of SEXIH01 that are that way. They faded way more contrasty with a broader range of color than the current OD IH jeans.
