Smokers Anonymous
-
Smokers Anonymous is for all of us smokers. Obviously there are a few. Maybe this thread will launch one or more of us to quit, maybe not. I know I am curious as to what you all smoke, how long, etc… If this is an awful idea, please just delete it (Doug or Beats).
-
Nah, I think it's a great thread
But see what you guys do to your mod team???
Giles, Beatle and I all smoke! (don't know about shoque)
-
LOL..I actually quit smoking for a year in order to find out if it effects my Marathon results. All of 2 minutes faster - and I really blame the tailwind…
-
Yeah, I've found that smoking affects my stamina as well…that tenth pint of Guinness is really hard to choke down without a smoke...
-
I smoke roll ups, not excessively but persistently. Time to quash it again (did 2 years cold turkey a while back).
-
LOL @ Doug

Aren't you guys state-side much more heavily proscribed than us Euros? Like, aren't you shunned by the vapid clean living mall zombies that surround you?
-
I get the occassional person waving their hands in front of their faces, and once in a blue moon someone telling me how bad it is for me, but my usual response is "what's your problem? It's not like I'm kicking your ass on the sidewalk"
I'm usually pretty calm and zen, but I have a low tolerance for people who feel the need to make themselves feel superior by stating the obvious
I smoke Newports

It is like I am an alien out here in California smoking. I have somewhat of a "fuck you" attitude when it comes to all that. I mean, I am considerate and would never smoke next to children and try to stay away from people while I do smoke. However, if I am outside of a bar or walking down the street and you look at me with a sour puss face because I am making a decision to smoke outside in the public… the FUCK YOU!
-
smoking has been a part of human culture for hundreds and hundreds of years. to me a jazz bar without people smoking sounds more like a juice bar…
-
Yeah, for me that's a little part of it; a wilfull, self destructive fuck you at the world.
-
Seriously, for fuck sakes…people are killing each other around the world...Jessie cheated on Sandra...and Kirstie Alley has another show about her being fat...I don't understand why people make such a big deal about smoking when you look at the big picture...
-
Just another peg for puritanism, Doug….
-
Marlboro Flavour Plus or Lights.
I'm glad you can't smoke at restaurants here anymore, though.
-
I understand all perspectives but smoking does cause people to die in a horrible way that they may otherwise never have had to suffer through. Yes of course in comparison to the bigger issues around the globe it is petty, but to those who lose family and friends from something that can completely be avoided, it is awful. I struggle with it every day. I understand the benefits for myself as well as the fact that it is killing me slowly. That is some crazy stuff to think about… On that note, I am going to have a smoke. This thread is stressing me out! ???

Some of the best statements I read on here ever! Doug, I love that response. Will have to use that some time.
Lando, yours is exactly my attitude.
Beatle, you're right, a jazz bar without smokers seems like a kindergarten. Although if they have singers, I can understand why one shouldn't necessarily smoke, unless the singer smokes, too.
I smoke cigars; not much, maybe one every ten days. But smoking cigars in public is almost impossible in the US.

…once in a blue moon...
I have both done this (gently, but appropriatly to people younger than me, natch) and been told this, the latter more recently as I was at nearby CVS and the guy told me about his cancer and it's effect on his daughter. Then, he proceeded to draw an analogy from the life degrading effects of smoking tobacco to (presumably his??) engaging in illict sex, to which my only response was, 'well, i'm not into illict sex, so that's one less self-contradictory behavior'.
I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing the good/bad/ugly effects of anything, but when the 'think of of children!' hand-waving starts is when I drag extra deep for all the other intangible horrors ignored.
I smoke American Spirits and wish Lucky Strikes still made the rounds.

Point is to make more money for the industry. You smoke more to get to the required nicotine level. But that also means you smoke more paper and shit. They say it is probably better not to smoke lights. The other thing is that they are supposed to give you the illusion that smoking lights is not as bad for you.
